“A Warner Bros. Hit !”
In late 1941, Rick Leland (Humphrey Bogart) is court-martialed out of the army and boards a Japanese ship bound for the Orient, saying plainly that he owes his country nothing. Among the passengers are the genial Dr. Lorenz (Sydney Greenstreet), who takes an interest in him, and Alberta Marlow (Mary Astor), who is watching the same man. John Huston sets the two of them side by side at the rail, each waiting to see which of them talks first.
