Lt. Joe Rossi (Humphrey Bogart) and Capt. Steve Jarvis (Raymond Massey) are Merchant Marine sailors who want one thing: a chance to hit back at the Germans who sank their last ship. They get it by taking a supply vessel in a convoy bound for Russian allies, with a U-boat waiting in the water. Lloyd Bacon makes it a story about ordinary working men whose job is to keep the cargo moving.
