Charlie Kaufman (Nicolas Cage), a screenwriter paralyzed by self-doubt, adapts Susan Orlean's book about a man obsessed with orchids. He becomes fixated on Orlean herself, imagining her inner life while he struggles with the screenplay. Spike Jonze traces the line between watching someone and needing them, until Charlie's invented version of Orlean (Meryl Streep) and the orchid hunter John Laroche (Chris Cooper) blur.
