In 1995 Bombay, Rohit Kumar (Aamir Khan), a man with little money, falls for Kiran Dayal, a rich girl whose parents would never allow the match. She marries him anyway, without their blessing, and the first months with their baby son Sunil are happy ones. Mansoor Khan, working loosely from Kramer vs. Kramer, lets small quarrels pile up between Rohit and Kiran (Manisha Koirala) until a marriage built on love has to survive on whatever is left.
