Karthik Varadharajan (R. Madhavan) wants Shakthi Selvaraj (Shalini), and he gets her, marrying her against the wishes of both their families. Mani Ratnam follows the two young people as they start their life together and find that marriage is not the bed of roses they had imagined. With their families still opposed and their love not yet tested by ordinary days, the marriage itself is what they stand to lose.
