Alexander Nevsky

(1938)Directed by Sergei Eisenstein, Dmitriy Vasilev109 minDrama, History, War
“The mighty epic of 13th Century Russia...of the "Battle on the Ice" when the invading German hordes led by the Teutonic Knights were driven from the soil of Russia - forever.”

In the thirteenth century, German knights invade Russia and take over a city in the east, and Prince Alexander Nevsky (Nikolai Cherkasov) makes his stand at Novgorod. Sergei Eisenstein stages the build-up to the battle on frozen Lake Chudskoe, while two of Alexander's men, Vasili (Nikolai Okhlopkov) and Gavrilo (Andrei Abrikosov), compete for a local maiden. Underneath it sits a plain idea: a people holds together only when it has to defend what is theirs.
