Ali and Nino

“While the world was falling apart, they were falling in love.”

Baku sits in the Russian province of Azerbaijan, where a Muslim prince and a Georgian aristocrat's daughter grow up side by side, and the oil beneath the city is about to draw the whole world's attention. Ali Khan Shirvanshir (Adam Bakri) and Nino Kipiani (María Valverde) fall in love as the First World War breaks out. Asif Kapadia's film sets their love against a question each of them must answer: what is owed to a country, and what is owed to a person.
