A message turns up inside a satellite, and the cryptographer Alex Jacobs (Kyle Gallner) is the one who works out what it says. Before long, government agents are following him, and so are figures that don't seem to belong to this world. Michael G. Cooney keeps Alex alone with his screens and his notes, a man who understands the message better than anyone and cannot tell who is safe to ask.
