Hans-Peter (Julius Weckauf) is a boy in the Ruhr valley who does voices for anyone who will watch and pulls faces in the mirror until he gets a laugh. He grows up in a household with Margret (Luise Heyer) and Heinz (Sönke Möhring), and in time he becomes Germany's Hape Kerkeling. Caroline Link films his childhood in warm, slightly faded colors, so the humor and the sadness sit in the same frame.
