In 1910, the actress Naomi Murdoch (Barbara Stanwyck) comes back to the small town she left a decade earlier, after deserting her husband Henry (Richard Carlson) and their children. Douglas Sirk follows her into the family home, where her daughter Joyce (Marcia Henderson) and Lily (Lori Nelson) are now nearly grown. Naomi has only a short visit to win back a place in the household, and the town has not forgotten what she did.
