All Quiet on the Western Front

(1930)Directed by Lewis Milestone133 minDrama, War
“They left for war as boys never to return as men.”

Paul Bäumer (Lew Ayres) wants what his schoolmaster Kantorek (Arnold Lucy) promised, glory for the Fatherland, so he and his classmates enlist in the German Army and are sent to the Western Front. Lewis Milestone follows the boys from the classroom into the trenches, where the speeches stop working. Paul's closest bond there is with Stanislaus "Kat" Katczinsky (Louis Wolheim), an older soldier who teaches him how to stay alive.
