Willie Stark (Broderick Crawford) starts out a man of humble beginnings and honest intentions, and he wants power badly enough to take it by whatever means are open to him. Robert Rossen follows him through the eyes of Jack Burden (John Ireland), a reporter who watches Willie climb in the American South. The film is about how a good purpose gets worn down by the methods used to reach it.
