Gloves Donahue (Humphrey Bogart) is a Broadway gambler who only wants to keep his shady friends in cheesecake and his mother happy. When a baker turns up dead, he and his crew trail the killers into a ring of Nazi saboteurs led by Franz Ebbing (Conrad Veidt). Vincent Sherman sends them through a New York of nightclubs and warehouses, and a battleship is the target.
