Fulvio Imbriani (Marcello Mastroianni) is an aging revolutionary in 1815 who no longer believes in the cause he gave his youth to, and he wants out. His old comrades, though, are planning an insurrection in Southern Italy, and he is drawn back in against his better judgment. The Taviani brothers set him among men still singing the anthem he can barely lift his voice to.
