In 1973, fifteen-year-old William Miller (Patrick Fugit) gets a Rolling Stone assignment to follow the rock band Stillwater on tour, and his mother Elaine (Frances McDormand) lets him go. On the road he falls in with the guitarist Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) and Penny Lane (Kate Hudson). Cameron Crowe's story rests on one boy's chance at his first cover story, a deadline and a friendship he can't write honestly about.
