Why María left her family in the countryside is the first thing Benito Zambrano's film holds back, though her flat in a poor neighbourhood and her work as a cleaning-woman are plain enough. Pregnant by a man who won't see her, she is managing alone until her father is brought to the city for an operation and her mother (María Galiana) moves in. Ana Fernández plays María, standing in a decaying flat with her mother's bags just inside the door.
