“Two Men, Two Worlds, One Cause.”

In Germany during the Second World War, Kurt Gerstein (Ulrich Tukur) works at the SS Institute for Hygiene, where he learns that a poison gas he helped develop is being used to kill Jews. Costa-Gavras, adapting Rolf Hochhuth's play The Deputy, follows him to Riccardo Fontana (Mathieu Kassovitz), a young Jesuit priest, and the Vatican. Gerstein keeps carrying what he knows from one office to the next, and no one will act on it.
