American Girl

Fen Liang (Caitlin Fang) is thirteen and wants to go back to California, where her friends are and where she feels she belongs. Instead she is in Taiwan in 2003, enrolled in a new school while SARS keeps everyone in masks, and her mother Lily (Karena Lam Kar-yan) is sick with breast cancer. Fiona Roan Feng-i, in her first feature, draws on her own childhood and keeps the camera at Fen's eye level.
