Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale) is a con man until FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper) catches him and forces him into a sting with his partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams). Their target is Mayor Carmine Polito (Jeremy Renner), but Irving's unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) keeps threatening to blow everything apart. The con works best when everyone involved believes their own story, and the moment someone stops performing.
