Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) is a TWA pilot with a wife, a mortgage, and a hunger for more than his salary can buy. A CIA operative named Monty Schafer (Domhnall Gleeson) recruits him to fly surveillance missions over Central America, then drug cartels offer him money to move cocaine. Liman builds the film at breakneck speed as Barry juggles competing masters, discovering that the higher you climb, the harder the fall.
