American Me

(1992)Directed by Edward James Olmos125 min · RCrime, Drama
“In prison they are the law. On the streets they are the power.”

Montoya Santana (Edward James Olmos) spent eighteen years in Folsom Prison, where he ran the drugs and the killings from inside. Released at last, he walks back into his old neighborhood meaning to live quietly, but his old gang buddies, J.D. (William Forsythe) and Mundo (Pepe Serna) among them, pull him back toward the life he knows. Olmos directs his first feature, and Santana learns how little of the man he planned to be is left.
