Amistad

“Freedom is not given. It is our right at birth. But there are moments when it must be taken.”

In 1839, aboard the Spanish slave ship La Amistad off the coast of Cuba, Cinque (Djimon Hounsou) leads the captives in a revolt against their captors. The ship is seized off Connecticut, and the men are jailed there while the courts argue over who owns them. Spielberg follows Theodore Joadson (Morgan Freeman) and the property lawyer Roger Baldwin (Matthew McConaughey), but Cinque, who has no English and no one to speak for him, carries the weight.
