“Possession Knows No Bounds”

In 1810s rural Tennessee, the Bell family farm is troubled by an invisible entity that no one can see or name. John Bell (Donald Sutherland) and his wife Lucy (Sissy Spacek) watch it turn on their daughter Betsy (Rachel Hurd-Wood), while Courtney Solomon builds the dread from scratching, whispers and small disturbances in the house. The film treats a family's buried secrets as the thing that finally refuses to stay quiet.
