In Rome in 1977, Giovanni Vivaldi (Alberto Sordi) is a government accountant nearing retirement, with one job left to finish. He wants his son Mario (Vincenzo Crocitti) settled in a stable post before he goes, and he will bend any rule to get him there. Mario Monicelli follows him through the offices and corridors of the bureaucracy, with Amalia (Shelley Winters) beside him, a man who has built his whole life around a single hope.
