An Inspector Calls

A young woman is dead, and no one at the Birling dinner table in northern England in 1912 can say why a stranger is asking about her. Inspector Goole (David Thewlis) turns up mid-meal and puts the same question to Arthur Birling (Ken Stott), his wife Sybil (Miranda Richardson) and their children: did you know her? Aisling Walsh keeps the family under that single question, and each answer shows how much a comfortable household is willing to leave unsaid.
