“Every secret takes on a life of its own.”

In the Wyoming ranchlands, Einar Gilkyson (Robert Redford) lives a quiet, stubborn life beside his one trusted friend, Mitch Bradley (Morgan Freeman). Then Jean (Jennifer Lopez), the woman he holds responsible for his son's death, turns up broke at his door with a granddaughter he has never met. Lasse Hallström keeps the two of them under one roof, Einar still silent at the table, Jean waiting for him to speak.
