An Unmarried Woman

(1978)Directed by Paul Mazursky124 min · RDrama, Romance, Comedy
“She laughs, she cries, she feels angry, she feels lonely, she feels guilty, she makes breakfast, she makes love, she makes do, she is strong, she is weak, she is brave, she is scared, she is… an unmarried woman.”

Erica Benton (Jill Clayburgh) wants to keep the life she has: sixteen years of marriage to Martin (Michael Murphy), an Upper East Side apartment, a daughter, a routine. Then Martin tells her he is leaving for a younger woman, and Paul Mazursky follows what Erica does with the days that come after. Jill Clayburgh stands in her kitchen in the Manhattan apartment, the marriage over, the morning still going on around her.
