In the late 18th century, Catherine (Stephanie Beacham) marries Charles Fengriffen (Ian Ogilvy) and moves into his family's stately mansion, where his father Henry (Herbert Lom) is waiting. Soon she is seeing terrifying visions and apparitions, and her hold on her own sanity begins to slip. A London psychiatrist, Dr. Pope (Peter Cushing), is called in, and Roy Ward Baker keeps the estate's secret just out of sight.
