Jane (Pamela Franklin) is a young English nurse on a cycling holiday through the French countryside with her friend Cathy (Michele Dotrice). When Cathy vanishes along the road, Jane starts searching an unfamiliar region where she barely speaks the language, with no way to tell who is helping her and who is not. Robert Fuest shoots the empty roads and open fields in plain daylight, and the dread comes from how little there is to hide behind.
