Frank Jessup (Robert Mitchum), an ambulance driver, answers a night call to a wealthy hillside house and meets Diane Tremayne (Jean Simmons). She is young and polite, and soon she turns up wherever he is, pulling him away from his girlfriend Mary (Mona Freeman) and into her family's affairs. Otto Preminger films it in long, calm takes that let the dread build slowly.
