In 17th-century France, during the reign of Louis XIV, Angélique (Michèle Mercier) is a country girl who marries her wealthy neighbor Jeoffray de Peyrac (Robert Hossein) as a matter of convenience. Somewhere along the way she falls in love with him, and then he is arrested and gone. Bernard Borderie stages her search across the Sun King's France as a costume adventure, the first of the film series built from Anne and Serge Golon's novels.
