Angélique de Plessis-Bellière (Michèle Mercier) has just lost her latest husband when Louis XIV (Jacques Toja) calls her to court. He needs her help persuading the Persian Ambassador, Zoukim Batchiary Bey (Sami Frey), to agree to a treaty. Bernard Borderie sends her into the ambassador's circle, and she goes in knowing only that the king has asked.
