Angus Bethune (Charlie Talbert) is a big, shy fourteen-year-old who is stunned, along with the whole school, to be picked to dance with Melissa Lefevre at the Winter Ball. His best friend Troy (Chris Owen) sets about giving him a new look, while his mother Meg (Kathy Bates) watches him get ready. Patrick Read Johnson sets it up so that one dance, and the cool kid who arranged it hoping he'd fail, carries all the weight of Angus's hopes.
