In the 1860s, the widowed English schoolteacher Anna Leonowens (Jodie Foster) crosses the world to Siam with her young son Louis (Tom Felton), hired to teach the many children of King Mongkut (Chow Yun-Fat). Andy Tennant, filming mostly in Malaysia, sets her inside a palace of gold, silk and rigid ceremony. Anna and the King soon begin to talk as equals, and each step closer puts both of them in danger.
