In 1935, Annie Oakley (Barbara Stanwyck) is a backwoods girl with a rifle and a talent for hitting what she aims at, and her aim lands her a place in Buffalo Bill's (Moroni Olsen) Wild West Show. There she falls for Toby Walker (Preston Foster), the show's sharpshooting star, whom she is expected to outshoot. George Stevens directs a story where every shot she lands on stage costs her a little more of the man she wants.
