“The boys are back in town.”

Jack Cates (Nick Nolte), a San Francisco cop, finds a photograph proving that the Ice Man, the drug kingpin he has chased for four years, has put a price on Reggie Hammond (Eddie Murphy). Reggie walks out of prison the next day, and Jack has only until then to reach him. Walter Hill pairs the two again, and the film rests on a plain idea: they trust each other less than they need each other.
