“A story of a mother who knows best... and a daughter who knows better.”

Adele August (Susan Sarandon) is a single mother who spends money she doesn't have and makes decisions on impulse. Her daughter Ann (Natalie Portman), a careful student with her eye on an Ivy League school, is the one who pays attention to the bills. Wayne Wang follows them from the Midwest to Beverly Hills, where Adele has dragged them to chase a Hollywood dream, and Ann keeps looking for a way out of it.
