“...where all roads lead to Rome!”

War correspondent Dick Ennis (Robert Mitchum) wants a story out of the Allied landing at Anzio in 1944, and he goes ashore with the American troops alongside Cpl. Jack Rabinoff (Peter Falk). The beaches are empty, but instead of pushing on toward Rome the army digs in, and the Germans answer with everything they have. Edward Dmytryk follows the soldiers and the generals above them through weeks of waiting, where a fast advance turns into a fight over every yard.
