Apart from You

In a 1933 geisha house, Kikue (Mitsuko Yoshikawa) is no longer young and works beside Terugiku (Sumiko Mizukubo), a girl whose family pushed her into the trade and who resents them for it. Kikue's teenage son Yoshio (Akio Isono) is ashamed of what his mother does for a living. Mikio Naruse's silent drama makes plain that work done out of necessity can still cost a person the respect of the ones they do it for.
