In 1950, a postal detective is found murdered, and Al Goddard (Alan Ladd) of the United States Postal Inspection Service is sent to arrest the two criminals believed responsible. Lewis Allen keeps the work procedural, with Goddard moving through the case beside Sister Augustine (Phyllis Calvert) and facing Earl Boettiger (Paul Stewart). Ladd stands in the wet street, his hat brim dripping, a coat dark with rain.
