A young man, Nur Ed Din (Franco Merli), is sent to buy a slave woman and ends up in a market full of them, where Zumurrud (Ines Pellegrini) is the one who chooses him. Pasolini nests one story inside another, so Aziz (Ninetto Davoli), the demon Franco Citti plays, and the lovers keep passing the film between them. Love and lovemaking drive every tale, and the stories treat desire as a plain fact of life.
