Paris, winter of 1938, is full of refugees who stay off the streets after dark and dodge the police. Dr. Ravic (Charles Boyer) is one of them, practicing medicine without papers while he hunts Haake (Charles Laughton), the Nazi who once wrecked his life. One rainy night he meets Joan Madou (Ingrid Bergman), and the affair that follows could cost him his chance at Haake and his hiding place.
