“Why are they here?”

Twelve alien crafts have settled over different parts of the world, and no one knows whether they came as visitors or as a threat. The army recruits the linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) to work out how to talk to them, with Ian Donnelly (Jeremy Renner) beside her and Colonel Weber (Forest Whitaker) pressing for answers. Denis Villeneuve keeps the film close on Louise, a woman whose whole career is words, now learning a language that has no use for hers.
