Ashes in the Snow

“One girl's voice breaks the silence of history”

Lina Vilkas (Bel Powley), sixteen and set on becoming an artist, is taken from her home in Lithuania one night with her mother Elena (Lisa Loven Kongsli) and her younger brother, loaded onto a transport bound for Siberia. Marius Markevicius follows the family through the Soviet deportations under Stalin, with Lina drawing in secret to keep a record of what happens. Her bond with her mother is what she holds onto, and the film keeps asking what it takes to hold it.
