“Born A Beast, To Be Human”

A famine has emptied medieval Japan, and a mother leaves her starving child behind in the wasteland around Kyoto. The boy, Asura (Masako Nozawa), grows up wild, taking whatever he must to stay alive, until he meets Shichirou (Hiroaki Hirata) and a monk (Kinya Kitaoji), and has to decide whether the thing inside him can be tamed. Keiichi Sato's film puts a child's last scrap of humanity up against a land that has none left.
