Milo James Thatch (Michael J. Fox) is a linguist obsessed with finding the lost city of Atlantis beneath the ocean. He joins a deep-sea expedition led by Commander Rourke (James Garner), descending into trenches where sunlight dies. They find the city alive, its people luminous and strange, and Milo meets Princess Kida (Cree Summer), who speaks to him in a language only he can read.
