Lieutenant Joe Costa (Jack Palance) leads an infantry company in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944, and he has stopped believing in his commander. Captain Erskine Cooney (Eddie Albert) gives the orders, and Costa has watched enough of them to doubt the man can be trusted with the lives behind them. Robert Aldrich puts Costa in the line of Cooney's decisions, where every order he follows costs him a little more of his patience.
