Au Hasard Balthazar

Marie (Anne Wiazemsky) is a girl in the French countryside who wants the newborn donkey her family has taken in for herself, and she names him Balthazar. Robert Bresson follows the animal as he is passed from one owner to the next, some of them gentle and some cruel. Marie and Balthazar keep returning to each other, two lives running in parallel, and neither can do much for the other.
