A stranger has been watching the Templeton family in New York, and when Elliot Hoover (Anthony Hopkins) finally approaches Janice (Marsha Mason) and Bill (John Beck), he tells them their 11-year-old daughter Ivy is his dead daughter, Audrey Rose. Audrey Rose died in a fiery car crash two minutes before Ivy was born. Robert Wise lets a parent's love run into a stranger's grief, and neither can be waved off as simply wrong.
