“Misery loves family”

A family crisis sends the Weston daughters back to the Midwest house they grew up in, each of them arriving from a different life. Barbara (Julia Roberts) brings her husband Bill (Ewan McGregor), while Ivy (Julianne Nicholson) and Karen (Juliette Lewis) come home to a mother, Violet (Meryl Streep), who still runs the house. John Wells, adapting Tracy Letts's play, keeps the daughters under one roof, and none of them can get clear of Violet.
